The jury for the first annual International Additive Manufacturing Award (IAMA, www.additive-award.com) has selected UK- and Texas-based Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies (www.hybridmanutech.com) for their submission of Ambit tool-changeable cladding heads, which combine CNC and additive technologies. The hybrid tool can be assimilated into any CNC machine, and enables metal deposition, finishing, and inspection of parts, using a tool changer to switch between processes.

“This significantly reduces costs and provides an intuitive adoption path for CNC operators,” says Jason Jones, co-founder and CEO of Hybrid Manufacturing. “The combination of additive with machining offers new capabilities, including in-process finishing, that cannot be delivered by either technology independently.”

The IAMA, borne of a partnership between the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT, www.amtonline.org) and the German Machine Tool Builders Association, will be presented to Hybrid Manufacturing during a reception at the MFG Meeting in Orlando, Florida, on March 6.

“The winning submission is a perfect nod to where we foresee the industry’s future: an integration of ‘subtractive’ CNC machining with the evolving capabilities of additive,” says AMT President Douglas Woods.
