When the newly launched HockeyStickPutters company wanted to display its product –  golf putters shaped like hockey sticks – in retail stores, the company's owner called on Renze Display, which specializes in point-of-purchase displays and large-format event graphics.

The owner of the startup company, which has licensing contracts with several professional and college hockey teams, wanted 12 P-O-P displays that would be placed in a limited number of high-end golf pro shops.

To begin, Renze used VectorWorks for the original CAD design of the structure itself, which comprised a printed 2 x 4-foot backerboard, base, sides, and routed slots for the top of the putters. It utilized Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to produce the graphic, which included a photo of a person using the product to putt.

Once the design work was complete, the crew turned to its Fujifilm Acuity UV flatbed printer with Onyx Postershop and Sericol KO-Series UV inks to direct print the image onto 3mm white Alcan Dibond. “We needed a substrate with great print quality, rigid durability, ease of routing, and the ability for our customer to bend it easily on site with some low-cuts in order to assemble on site,” says Renze's Mike Compton. Each display took 15 minutes to print.

The Dibond pieces were then routed to shape using the shop's CNC router, and Renze used its router to low-cut the Dibond in all places where it needed to bend for assembly. Finishing took 20-25 minutes per piece. An Astroturf putting surface was glued on after printing, and the stick holder was milled using the CNC. Total turnaround time to the client was just 12 days.

“This was a great project to demonstrate our P-O-P engineering capabilities, the use of our CNC router, and the ability to use our flatbed printer to print high-resolution images directly onto Dibond,” says Compton. In addition, he says, “It was a great example of taking raw materials through printing and routing to assembly and then UPS-able shipping with detailed set-up instructions to the retail outlets.”
