HP has introduced two new flatbed scanners, the Scanjet G4010 and G4050, both designed for photo, slide, and negative scanning and both appropriate for advanced amateur as well as professional photographers.

The built-in transparent media adapter in both units allows for the scanning of transmissive media, converting positives and negatives into digital files. The Scanjet G4050 is capable of scanning up to 16 35mm slides, 30 negative frames, two medium-format film frames, or one large-format film frame at once. The G4010 can scan five 35mm slides and six negative slides simultaneously.

These scanners utilize 6-color scanning technology and offer 96-bit color depth. Both are capable of producing images with a 4800-dpi optical resolution and can scan documents and photos up to 8.5 x 12.3 in. The G4010 and G4050 also feature four one-touch task buttons, allowing the user to quickly organize, edit, share, and save scans. Other common features include red-eye removal, HP Adaptive Lighting-improve contrast, dust- and scratch-removal capabilities, and color restoration.

Estimated price: Scanjet G4050, $199; Scanjet G4010, $149.
