From Old Comes New

For The Camera and the Eye, part of his “Transitions” portfolio designed to “reflect the relationship between art and science, Jay Seldin used a combination of images from old textbooks and medical journals, faded newsprint, masking tape, and even photographic film edges from 4×5 Kodak Tri-X film. He executes his scanning in-house with a high-res Epson Expression 1640XL flatbed scanner with a transparency adapter as well as a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 35mm film scanner. In addition, Seldin shot additional textures using a Canon EOS 10D digital camera. He used Adobe Photoshop CS to assemble the various images.

For output, Seldin produces all his 30 x 24-in. prints in-house, on demand and in limited editions. He uses pigment-based Ultrachrome inks on his Epson 9600 printer. The paper is a 100-percent rag, mouldmade Enhanced Somerset Velvet for Epson, manufactured by Inveresk St Cuthberts Mill in England. (Jay Seldin Editions: www.jayseldin.com)
