The phrase “art exhibit” likely brings to mind the image of a sterile, white-walled room with assorted, framed works of art on display, meant to be viewed and admired from a distance. Flutter, an interactive multimedia art experience in Los Angeles, turns the traditional concept of the art gallery on its head. The 2019 exhibit invited visitors to “dance, paint, play, create, enjoy virtual reality, projection mapping, sound baths, and so much more,” according to its website, to propel its mission to make fine art by museum-level contemporary artists (including Cyril Lancelin, Elise Peterson, Leah Guadagnoli, Liz Collins, Katie Stout, and Saya Woolfalk) more accessible and fun, while addressing issues surrounding mental health.

A major component of the pop-up experience was bespoke wallpaper carefully crafted by Flavor Paper for each unique, artist-specific section of the space. “The client wanted the experience to be as immersive and dynamic as possible to thoroughly engage visitors,” says Meghan Dockendorf, Flavor Paper director of communication. “So, we really went for it by incorporating invisible inks, scratch-and-sniff scents, and textured and reflective materials to help reimagine the 6700-square-foot space.”
Over a period of six months, the shop worked closely with the artists to create a variety of dynamic wallpapered zones, also incorporating designs from Flavor Paper’s Wild Life collection (including designs from Flavor Paper owner, Jon Sherman). “Flutter offers a well-rounded tour of our capabilities and exemplifies our passion for pushing the innovation envelope to explore all boundaries of conventional wallcovering design … and then break them,” says Dockendorf.
