Epson Announces Professional Edition Stylus Pro Printers

Epson has released its Professional
Edition series of printers, based upon
the company's Stylus Pro 9800, Stylus
Pro 7800, and Stylus Pro 4800, all
announced earlier this year (see our
June issue, p. 30). The Professional editions
of each model include the printer,
a ColorBurst RIP, and internal 10/100
BaseT Ethernet connectivity.

The ColorBurst RIP, designed for
Epson by ColorBurst, is a PostScript
Level 3 RIP that can be installed as either
a dedicated RIP server for client sharing
or run locally on a workstation. The
RIP offers: ICC compliance, CMYK curve
adjustment for color control, built-in linearization
for accurate color across multiple
printers, Pantone-licensed color
and SWOP-certified color on all Epson
proofing media, and more.

The internal 10/100 BaseT Ethernet
is compatible with Mac OS X (Panther and
Tiger) as well as Windows XP. It's also
compatible with Apple Rendezvous and
Bonjour technology.

As with the standard Stylus Pro printers,
each of the Professional Edition
models uses Epson's pigment-based
aqueous UltraChrome K3 inks, designed
for high-res photographic printing. The
inks offer CMYcm plus Light Black, Light
Light Black, and a Matte Black that can
be switched out with normal Photo Black
(K). Epson reports that the inkset offers
a wide color gamut, high scratch-resistance,
stable color immediately after
printing, and a resultant black density of
up to 2.3.

The Stylus Pro 9800 Professional
Edition can handle media up to 44-in.
wide and offers a maximum resolution of
2880 x 1440 dpi. At 720 x 720 dpi, it can
produce a 44 x 60-in. print in 29 minutes
in High Speed mode, Epson reports; at
2880 x 1440 dpi, it can produce that
same sized print in 81:42, also in High
Speed mode. Estimated US price: $5995
($4995 standard).

The Stylus Pro 7800 Professional
Edition handles media up to 24-in. wide.
Offering 2880 x 1440 maximum resolution,
the 7800 can produce a 24 x 30-in.
print in 9:54, at 720 x 720 dpi (in High
Speed mode). At 2880 x 1440 dpi, it can
produce that same sized print in 26:54,
also in High Speed mode. Estimated US
price: $3995 ($2295 standard).

The Stylus Pro 4800 Professional
Edition can handle media up to 17-in.
wide and offers a maximum resolution
of 2880 x 1440 dpi. At 720 x 720 dpi, it
can produce a 16 x 20-in. print in 4:07, at
High Speed print mode; at 2880 x 1440
dpi, it can produce that same sized print
in 18:57, also in High Speed mode. Price:
$2495 ($1995 standard).

In addition, Epson has joined forces
with ColorSciences to produce a prepress
proofing solution that incorporates
the Epson Stylus Pro 4800, 7800,
or 9800 and the Epson UltraChrome K3
pigmented inks and proofing media with
ColorScience's CrossMatch Enterprise
solution. The CrossMatch solution continuously
monitors remote-proofing systems,
identifies variances, and makes
adjustments to the printer.
