Durst Rolls Out 320R UV, Rhopac 160, Single-Pass SP 60

Durst has introduced three new printers: the Rho 320R industrial roll printer, the Rho SP 60 single-pass UV-inkjet printer, and the Rhopac 160 Corrugated Display UV-inkjet printer.

The new Rho 320R is an industrial roll-fed UV printer that features the company’s Quadro Array printhead technology, a print-carriage concept based on a magnetic linear drive system, and new low-odor, VOC-free Rho Roll inks.

The 4-color (CMYK) Rho 320R prints widths up to 10.5 ft on a range of coated and uncoated media up to 1400 sq ft/hr, with a maximum resolution of 600 dpi. White printing and light-color options are available. The machine can accommodate a wide range of media up to 2-mm thick. Users can opt to print two rolls side-by-side up to 62-in. each, and take advantage of a media-tracking feature that allows for registered doubled-sided printing.

For the Rho 320R, Durst has developed specific, virtually odorless UV-curing acrylic inks that afford quick curing, high adhesion even on uncoated surfaces, and high flexibility. The high pigmentation of the ink provides high color density with a wide color gamut. And thanks to the properties of the inks, flameproof materials retain their properties after printing, says the company. The integrated ink tanks have 10-l capacity per color, and are refillable on-the-fly; refill inks are in 5-liter containers.

Other features include:

* An external Caldera RIP server with GrandRIP+ software.

* A transport mechanism featuring a roll support at the loading side allowing the use of pneumatic 3-in. or optional 6-in. core axles with an outside diameter of up to 17.7 in. A specially designed device allows the loading of 11.5-ft-wide media by a single person.

* Enhanced user software with functions including the ability to archive the selected tension for each media; a “tuning option” to compensate for temperature-related media characteristics; a stepless Skip White function to pass over unprinted areas in XY direction; automated workflow using RIP-Job tickets and hot folders; and an interface to external order management.

The Rhopac 160, which actually made its debut at Fespa earlier this year, is an entry-level UV digital press for corrugated displays, allowing print shops and corrugated converters to enter the corrugated display market more economically, says Durst. It’s specifically designed to print on corrugated boards as well as on a large variety of rigid and semi-flexible P-O-P materials, and is coupled with a roll-to-roll printing option.

A 4-color (CMYK) printer, the Rhopac 160 is upgradeable, with additional printing features such as white-ink, varnish, light colors (lm, lc), and spot colors. It can hit reach a top speed of 270 sq ft/hr, hit a best resolution of 600 dpi, and handle media up to 1.58-in. thick. Three UV system inks are available for the Rhopac 160:

* Rho ink flexible set: for flexible material such as blueback paper, foils, textiles, vinyl or for boards that must be bent or deep drawn;

* Rho ink rigid set: for stiff material that normally show a bad adhesions such as metals, acryl, Plexiglas, and glass; and

* Paperboard ink: an economic UV ink for paper lined/absorbing surfaces and for indoor use.

The Rhopac 160 comes complete with Durst Rho Linux software and an external Caldera RIP Server (GrandRip+). RIP features include the ability for the user to select various print modes, including “backlit mode” that automatically applies double the amount of ink.

The Rho SP 60 is based upon the company’s Gamma 60 high-speed ceramic tile printer and, hence, originally designed to print “green” (unfired) tiles with ceramic ink. The SP 60 has been further developed to handle wooden and cork panels for floors and other media used in home furnishing and packaging.

A single-pass UV inkjet printer capable of printing at speeds up to 350 ft/min (21,000 sq ft/hr) in CMYK, the SP 60 can print not only on wood and cork but on a range of other materials as well, including MDF, ceramic tiles, cardboard for packaging, plaster ceiling panels, plastics, and more. It can accommodate a thickness of 3 mm (0.12 in.) and a width of 63 cm (24.8 in.).
