THE CLIVE DAVIS Institute of Recorded Music at NYU Tisch (ReMu) isn’t your typical college campus. Rather than traditional classrooms and lecture halls, the state-of-the-art downtown Brooklyn school features recording studios, rehearsal and viewing areas, editing suites, and even a special podcast room. What really makes the space stand out, however, are the 25 multidimensional murals and patterns throughout the institute.

ReMu directors reached out to Brooklyn-based Flavor Paper after learning of the shop’s creative wallcovering work for Beastie Boys founding member Mike D. (ReMu is home to late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch’s renowned recording studio, Oscilloscope – complete with the band’s original instruments and gear.) Jon Sherman, founder and creative director, says ReMu sought to create “a space that was highly functional yet boldly aesthetic.” Flavor Paper’s bread and butter.

With tall ceilings and the sounds of busy Brooklyn streets to contend with, the PSP went beyond traditional wallcoverings by installing inline and custom designs printed on type II vinyl wallpaper and Flavor Paper-produced acoustically transparent fabric. Graphics – including a larger-than-life vinyl record stack and the Brooklyn Bridge – output on the shop’s HP Latex 3600 over the course of three years adorn hallways, hangout zones, viewing areas and corresponding live rooms, and recording studios. The end result? A college campus truly unlike any other.
