WALL AND WINDOW installations seem to have a life of their own for even the most seasoned PSPs. Challenges from outdoor elements, uneven and textured surfaces such as brick, concrete, plywood, and trying to smooth media on slick windows proves to be tricky, Here, three expert wide-format printers share successful projects that keeps not only their customers, but passers-by coming back.

FASTSIGNS of RGV
McAllen, TX

A high-impact signage project for Harlingen CISD, in partnership with trusted contractor D. Wilson Construction, FASTSIGNS of RGV completed this amazing install under the guidance of Ernest Macias, whi led the install. It included halo-lit dimensional letters, large-scale wall murals, and a 30-foot elevator wrap. A standout challenge was mounting signage on a curved wood wall above a staircase. The team had to open an adjacent office wall to daisy-chain lighting, coordinating across multiple trades. Other hurdles included strict timelines and surfaces that required custom wall prep for vinyl adhesion.

Tip: Always test and verify wall prep before mural installation — especially after recent painting. Improperly cured or finished walls can cause vinyl failure.

DCG One
Settle, WA

For College Spark, Seattle, the DCG One team transformed bold artwork into vibrant wall graphics and signage that energized the space. The vinyl tiling layout for this wall mural was printed on an Epson S60 600C with a fresh 67 Plus rendering using 3M 180cv3 w/ 3M 8519 overlaminate. There was Pantone as well as spot color matching and a full rebuild of the client’s Canva file.

The mosaic symbolizes collaboration — a core value at College Spark Washington. Each shape and color reflects the diverse voices, perspectives, and efforts that come together to create something more powerful than any one part alone.

One of the biggest technical challenges was surface prep. The existing walls had a semi-gloss finish that hindered adhesion. The team multiple adhesion tests and worked closely with the client to schedule repainting using mural-friendly primers.

Tip: For large-scale wall murals, proper surface prep is critical — especially with fresh paint. Communicate with painters in advance, test adhesion, and allow curing time.

Sign Shop
Bellfontaine, OH

In March 2024, the former Cream Corner— once Sunbury’s cherished post-ballgame hangout — went up for sale after a decade as a barbecue joint. Community-minded Chip and Bambi Hanawalt jumped on the listing within two hours and vowed to bring back the. Beloved town staple. They then went to Jon Watkins and his team at Sign Shop to revive an iconic location. As Watkins notes, choice can make or break the install — especially on challenging substrates like cinder block. For project, the team used General Formulations RoughMark™ 885AE, a high-tack vinyl wrap film specifically engineered for rough, textured surfaces such as brick, concrete block, and stucco. The mural, featuring original 1960s imagery and the phrase “Ice Cold Memories,” now draws crowds daily. It’s not just a wrap — it’s a time machine that sticks.
