In the beginning of drop-on-demand wide-format inkjet printing, there was only one type of ink: aqueous dye.( The first superwide inkjets were more like digital sign-painting machines than today's drop-on-demand inkjets. Yes, they used solvent-based, pigmented inks, but instead of conventional inkjet printheads, they used digital “airbrush” technology to output graphics at resolutions in the 72 dpi range.) These water-based inks used easy-to-mix dyes as colorants to provide exceptionally wide color gamuts.
