The first-generation wide-format inkjet printers were great for doing one-off prints for trade-show graphics and other very short runs. But they were unacceptably slow for any sort of volume. Combine inkjet printers' slow speeds and the high cost of coated inkjet media, and it quickly became apparent that the market for wide-format graphics wouldn't ever take off in a serious way until the output could be sold at prices that were more competitive with conventional screen or offset printing.
