Canon has introduced its 21.1-mpxl EOS 5D Mark II DSLR, successor to the company’s EOS 5D. This new model features a full-frame 24 x 26 mm CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 4 imaging processor, which powers the 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion.

The 5D Mark II offers continuous shooting at 3.9 fps for an unlimited number of full-resolution JPEGs to the capacity of the memory card, or up to 14 raw images in a single burst when using a UDMA CF card. The camera also includes a 15-point AF sensor with nine selectable AF point and six additional assist AF points with enhanced light source detection and AF micro-adjustment. The camera provides ISO speeds from ISO 100 up to ISO 6400 in 1/3-stop increments, as well as high-speed settings, H1 and H2, of ISO 12800 and ISO 25600 and a low-speed setting of ISO 50.

The camera features three Live View AF modes: Quick (for fastest setting of automatic focus), Live (contrast-detection AF with the image sensor), and Face Detection (the largest face closest to the center of the frame is targeted).

In addition, the new 5D adds: peripheral illumination correction, to even brightness across the image field; auto lighting optimizer technology, which analyzes brightness and automatically adjusts dark areas in images; two small raw formats (5- and 10-mpxl); two Silent Shooting modes; a new Creative Auto mode, which allows users to make image adjustments such as aperture or shutter speed on a navigation screen on the camera’s LCD menu while still shooting in automatic mode; and an integrated cleaning system.

The EOS 5D Mark II is scheduled for a late November release. Price: $2699, body only; $3499 with EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM zoom lens.
