Canon has introduced its latest digital
SLR”?the EOS 30D. Built upon the EOS
20D format, the EOS 30D now includes a
2.5-in. LCD monitor (an increase over the
20D's 1.8-in. monitor) with a 170″? viewing
angle, a shutter durability rated to
100,000 cycles, and spot metering capability
that covers approximately 3.5% of
the viewfinder area at the center.

The 8.2-Mpxl EOS 30D permits userselectable
high-speed and low-speed
continuous shooting rates up to 5 fps
for up to 30 consecutive frames in JPEG
mode, 11 frames in RAW, or 9 frames in
RAW+JPEG. It also features: a CMOS sensor;
DIGIC II Imaging processor; Picture
Style setting simulation to control incamera
modifications of color, contrast,
sharpness, and more; a 0.15-sec start-up
time; and a nine-point Wide-Area autofocus
system.

To speed up workflow for professional
photographers, the EOS 30D also features
improved folder management, providing
manual folder creation and raising
the number of images in each folder
to 9999 (up from 100 in the EOS 20D).
By pressing one button, EOS 30D users
can directly print and directly download
images. When connected to a PictBridgecompatible
printer, the user can also
select paper sizes, cropping, and some
special effects. The camera is fully compatible
with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses.

“Canon focused the EOS 30D digital
SLR on professional photographers who
need to keep a close watch on their equipment
budget and advanced amateurs
who want to step up in capabilities,” says
Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president
and general manager of the consumerimaging
group at Canon USA.

Price: $1399 for body only; $1499
for body plus EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II
zoom lens.

Canon also has introduced two new
lenses: EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and
EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM. The EF-S 17-
55mm f/2.8 IS USM has a large maximum
aperture that, combined with higher
shutter speeds, can minimize subject
motion blur. The internal stabilization
has a sharpness benefit equivalent to a
three-stop faster shutter speed, making
this lens good for use in low-light situations.
Compatible with the EOS 30D, 20D,
EOS Digital Rebel XT, and EOS Digital Rebel
SLRs, the lens has a 35mm equivalent
focal length of 27-88mm and will be available
in May with an estimated selling
price of $1149.

The EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM lens
may be of particular interest to professional
photographers. The lens features
improvements in AF speed as well as lens
coatings that minimize ghost and flare. In
addition to its 1.8x faster autofocus, this
lens offers high-speed manual focus, distance
encoding for E-TTL II flash, and a circular
aperture diaphragm that improves
the appearance of background areas.
The lens has an estimated selling price
of $2099.
