To produce a banner of artist Beat Toniolo’s image depicting the European countries participating in the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship, German-based Stiefel Digitalprint (stiefel-online.de) used its Nur Expedio 5000 (now HP Scitex XP5100) with UV inks, printing onto 300-gsm mesh substrate. The mesh was flexible enough to float as well as navigate the whitewater of the Rhinefall basin. Banner tailoring had to be tightly fixed to eliminate creases but allow the banner to sit on the water surface (special fixtures on airbags helped ensure flotation). The banner won the External Category and the overall Platinum Award at the 2009 FESPA Digital Print Awards.
