When the NFL’s New England Patriots were looking to promote The Hall at Patriot Place—a museum that takes guests on a tour of Patriots and New England football history via print, audio, and video—it chose an American Airlines gate at Boston’s Logan International Airport as a natural site. Not only is American the team’s official airline, but Logan is the largest airport in New England and one of the 20 busiest airports in the US, with more than 26 million passengers a year.

The Patriots and American Airlines partnered with Image Resolutions in Norwell, Massachusetts, to produce the job, along with media supplier D&P Media for print and media company Photo Tex Group.

“We were contacted because of our experience with the Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 and Photo Tex self-adhesive fabric paper,” says Bill Wenzel, Image Resolutions owner.

The New England graphics were designed by Patriots team representatives in Adobe Illustrator and then provided to Image Resolutions as Illustrator PDFs. “We did the tiling in Illustrator and saved out the tiles as PDFs,” says Wenzel. “This was done so that we could RIP a more manageable file size and, if necessary, quickly reprint any panels after final QC—or if there was an issue with the installation.”

Using its Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 with Onyx PosterShop 7.3 RIP, and Epson UltraChrome GS eco-solvent inks,

Image Resolutions imaged four wall murals in three different sizes, all onto Photo Tex media:
• Two panels at 4 x 44 feet;
• Two panels at 13 x 22 feet; and
• Two panels at 7 x 22 feet.

Total turnaround time for all output was one week. Image Resolutions delivered the graphics to American Airlines in rolls for installation.

“I felt this would be a high-visibility project both from the perspective of the final clients (Patriots and American Airlines) and the thousands of people that would get to see our work as they flew into and out of Logan airport in Boston,” says Wenzel.
