The Client: Utah’s Hogle Zoo

The Players: Ferrari Color (ferraricolor.com), Salt Lake City, Utah

Tools & Supplies: Durst Rho 160R UV, 3M Controltac Vinyl, 3M Comply Air-Egress Vinyl, 3M 8519 glossy overlaminate

The Job: Utah’s Hogle Zoo, which welcomed a million visitors last year, has an educational program that brings exotic animals to schools so students can experience them close-up. The zoo wanted the two vans used for the program to promote the zoo and act as a mobile billboard. This was a chance to show off Hogle’s wide array of residents and their natural habitats; each side featuring a different design. The zoo’s natural choice for the job: Ferrari Color, which had created plenty of signage for the Hogle Zoo in the past and even wrapped these same vans on a previous job.

Production: The Hogle Zoo has designed several wraps in the past, so this was familiar territory for its production staff. The colorful, wild wrap was created in Adobe Illustrator by the zoo’s Matt Bates and Jameson Weston. Ferrari Color had to help only with adding room for bleed, since the file was set up exactly to the original template.
Once the file was in-house, Ferrari turned to its Durst Rho 160R UV for output. Ferrari provided the zoo with a hardcopy proof that was printed with the Rho, then took approximately three hours to produce the final wraps onto 3M Controltac and perforated Comply Air-Egress vinyls. This was followed by 3M 8519 glossy overlaminate for shine and protection.

Before wrapping the vans (one standard-size van and one minivan), Ferrari inspected them for rust or chipped paint and other factors that could lead to vinyl failure. Then it was time for a wash and prime, and they were ready to go. It took just six hours for Ferrari Color’s Bryan Halladay and Jeff Richards to complete the installation; they used a 3M squeegee along with a torch, knife, and other standard tools of the trade.

“Utah's Hogle Zoo has two vans for outreach programs around the state, often visiting schools and community centers. To identify and highlight them, we used photographs and illustrations of some of our most popular zoo animals on both vans.” – Jameson Weston, Art Director for the Hogle Zoo
